Under Review: Starbucks Holiday Treats

The holiday season in Houston is marked by sixty-degree weather, Christmas lights on Nov. 1 and the return of Starbucks holiday drinks and treats. Starbucks offers four holiday beverages and four accompanying limited edition snacks.

Caramel Brulée Latte

While not the most festive, the Caramel Brulée Latte is one of the best Starbucks drinks. The caramel tones could be too sweet for some, but I think it tastes like crème brûlée in liquid form. The burnt sugar candy crystal topping completes the effect.

Cranberry Bliss Bar

The tangy cranberries and sugary cream cheese frosting decorating the Cranberry Bliss Bar are balanced by its moist and undramatic cake base. Like the caramel brulée latte, the Cranberry Bliss Bar could prove overly saccharine to some, but I think it is unparalleled in the realm of holiday desserts.

Eggnog Latte

As a huge fan of eggnog, I was excited to try the eggnog latte. Alas, I was underwhelmed. The topping, pure nutmeg, is both unattractive and overpowering. The drink itself tastes only vaguely of eggnog, similarly overpowered by nutmeg.

Frosted Snowman Cookie

As firm as a sugar cookie yet as crumbly as a shortbread cookie, the Frosted Snowman Cookie has much to offer. Sporting an adorable snowman shape, its frosting, which is white chocolate for the body and milk chocolate for the hat, makes it a unique treat.

Gingerbread Latte

If you’re craving a gingerbread house in liquid form, keep looking. This coffee has only a subtle gingerbread taste, but it compensates for its lack of gingerbread flavor with extravagant toppings: spiced whipped cream and swirled molasses syrup.

Holiday Gingerbread

Though often overlooked for its unassuming appearance, the holiday gingerbread loaf is a hidden treat. The soft cream cheese frosting and ginger candy mesh with its firm texture. This snack doesn’t make you want more, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Peppermint Mocha

This coffee is by far my favorite holiday Starbucks drink. Its strong peppermint flavor and chocolate syrup make it taste like a thin mint with Christmas flare. Plus, who can pass up such a garnish of chocolate curls swirled in sweetened whipped cream?

Peppermint Brownie Cake Pop

The peppermint brownie cake pop make sugarplums dance in my mouth. The tender, creamy chocolate brownie inside is coated by smooth white chocolate and covered in candy cane crystals. Its small size and lollipop handle make it a perfect treat on the go.
