A sign of the times…

Here I am, out at our place in the country, no internet. Wanted to catch up on some work, so I was reading English in-class papers from Friday. Forgot to download a couple at school, so I read those on my phone this morning!

When I was very young and spent time out here with my grandparents, it was a dirt road to get here and the only phone was a party line…. My electricity comes from the same rural co-op, I get my water from a well, and the sanitation is a septic tank–all like my grandparents. But reading schoolwork on my phone, texting people in Houston and Philadelphia, reading news from Europe (BBC and Le Monde)–just writing this blog– on something smaller than a sandwich.

Wow.

And yet, people are still killing each other, still screwing each other over for money and power, still lying to get those things or to hold on to them, still trying to look more impressive than their neighbors….

Cultural changes certainly outpace biological ones…
