Some people will try to make use of you. Don’t let them unless you just want to, but don’t be surprised either.

There is a basic asymmetry in the world: not everyone you like will like you back.

When you are too busy to smile at a young child discovering the world on a playground, or to enjoy the wildflowers on a spring day as you drive to Austin, or to help someone who needs your help, you are not a success, no matter how high your grades or who you date.

Self-indulgence every once in a while is a good thing: treat yourself periodically in a way that doesn’t hurt others.

Your muscles don’t get bigger without the pain of stretching hard; neither does your mind; neither does your soul.

It took me until I was about 55 to fully accept who I am and to embrace it, so don’t worry if you don’t know everything about yourself at 18.

Even when you’re right, it sometimes pays to be wrong.

Sometimes appearances are more important than substance. Usually, they’re not. It’s important to be able to distinguish the two kinds of occasions.

Hypocrisy is the lubrication of social intercourse.

I constantly discover things I don’t know. That’s both exciting and humbling, which is how you should face your own ignorance.
